Mental Health & Addictions Capital Redevelopment Project

MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTIONS WELLNESS AND TRANSITION CENTRE

This new facility, along with the programming and services to be offered, is a life-changing opportunity to better support Islanders who need more intensive and longer-term mental health, addiction and substance use care as part of their journey to recovery and more independent living.

Background

The province of PEI is investing in a new facility that provides increased and appropriate recovery-focused programming space for mental health, addiction and substance use services as well as fully accessible transitional accommodations for individuals with complex care needs. The new Mental Health and Addictions Wellness and Transition Centre is an opportunity to better support the many clients who transition from in-patient, hospital-based mental health, addiction and substance use care and still need intensive, longer-term care or supported living care as part of their journey.

Service

The Mental Health and Addictions Wellness and Transition Centre will serve as a centralized, purpose-built provincial facility offering a continuum of structured, recovery-oriented services designed to meet the diverse and evolving needs of individuals experiencing mental health, addiction, and substance use challenges.

Among the core programs housed within the Centre is the Addictions Transition Program, a 28-day residential initiative that provides intensive therapeutic support for up to 12 clients, with a focus on achieving and sustaining abstinence, enhancing overall wellness, and preparing individuals for successful reintegration into their communities. Complementing this is the Addictions Intensive Day Program, which offers targeted daytime therapeutic services for up to 8 clients who have stable housing and community support. This program is designed to reinforce abstinence, promote continued recovery, and maintain community integration through structured, non-residential care.

In addition, the Centre will host the Mental Health Transition Program, a long-term residential service delivered within a stepped care framework, supporting up to 12 clients with complex, non-acute mental health, addiction, and/or substance use needs. Clients in this program will reside in home-like accommodations for a period ranging from 90 to 180 days, receiving individualized support aimed at reducing reliance on acute care services and facilitating recovery, life skills development, and community reintegration. This program is specifically tailored for individuals with a history of repeated acute care utilization or extended hospital stays, offering a stable and supportive environment that bridges the gap between hospital-based care and independent living.

Collectively, these programs reflect a comprehensive, client-centered approach to mental health and addiction recovery, emphasizing accessibility, continuity of care, and interdisciplinary service delivery within a modern, fully accessible facility designed to support both clients and health professionals.
